Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety disorder, panic/agoraphobia disorder, social anxiety disorder, etc.) are the most common psychiatric disorders and are associated with a high disease burden. Anxiety disorders often go unrecognized and untreated in primary health care. Treatment is indicated when the patient is severely distressed or has complications from the disorder. Anxiety disorders should be treated with psychological therapy, pharmacotherapy, or a combination of both. Cognitive-behavioral therapy can be considered psychotherapy with the highest level of evidence. First-line drugs are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. Benzodiazepines are not recommended for routine use. Other treatment options include pregabalin, tricyclic antidepressants, buspirone, moclobemide, and others. After remission, medication should be continued for 6 to 12 months. Efficacy, side effects, interactions, costs, and patient preferences must all be considered when developing a treatment plan.
